Orientation

Last evening was a Board Orientation for the new Governors of the Savannah Jewish Federation. Typically, when you do a Board Orientation 3 or 4 'newbies' chat around the table to become familiar with the Federation, it's mission, and their role on the board.

But last night was different as SJF President, Linda Sacks invited the entire Board to come to the Orientation. In my wildest dreams I never would have expected almost the entire Board to attend. I'm sure it wasn't their desire to hear me talk for 90 minutes, and although the Chinese Chicken Salad that was served was delicious (Thank you, Sarah Docar!), it wasn't that. I think it was their desire to meet the new Governors, to show their support, and share their experience(s).

We began the evening with a handout titled "On Being a Federation Board Member" which asked the question "Why are you here?" Before we went around the room sharing, I gave them some examples, "My parents were always involved...I have a sense of responsibility....I'm concerned for the Jewish people...Somebody asked me, etc" I alloted (in my mind) 15 minutes for the exercise. 50 minutes later, we finally had hear from everyone. I can't speak for all, but I sure learned alot, even about folks who I have known for many years.

It was amazing to hear from people who had been here their entire lives, who spoke about the JEA and how central it has been to their lives and how the Federation has supported the 111 year old institution.

It was amazing to hear from people who have been here less than five years who spoke about their passions and ideas.

It was amazing to learn about each person's motivation for serving, for giving, for "saying yes."

The 2023-24 Board of Governors reflects our community-young and old, Savannahian and newcomer, synagogue members and independents, exerienced and first timers.

What they all have in common is their desire to make the community a better place for us all, a concern for Jewish life here in Savannah, in Israel, and throughout the world, and a desire to give back.

It was an honor to share what the Federation is and does and if I had another two hours, we might have gotten halfway through it all. And while we could delve in to almost anything in detail, I could see little "lights of understanding" around the table.

I am excited to see what this group of leaders is going to do in the next few years to make their mark on our community. They already are leaders all and it bodes well for our future.
