Helping Jews Throughout the World
Today's Focus
Today, the focus of world Jewry is on the Jewish community of
Argentina where 25% of the Jewish population (50,000 people) has fallen below the poverty line.
Two years ago, only 3,000 Jews lived below the poverty line. In 2001, $1.5 million was budgeted
from the American Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) for Argentina, one year later, $9 million is
needed and for 2003 JDC estimates a need of $14 million for Argentina. The Jewish Agency For
Israel has estimated the cost of aliyah per person from Argentina is $7000. 150 new families are
coming every week to be added to the welfare rolls. The situation in Argentina is having a ripple
effect on Latin America.
A Threat To Israel
World Jewry is also focused on Israel. With a weakened economy due in large part to two years of
Intifada, suicide murders and a weakened morale, Israelis are lonely and need to feel our
support in physical ways...through visits, phone calls, emails, letters.
The Israel Emergency Campaign has helped provide emergency funds for victims of terror,
security guards for all schools with over 100 children, enhanced security systems for pre-schools
and kindergartens, a safe camp environment for over 230,000 Israeli children and trauma relief
where needed.
